Jacques-Louis David

The Death of Marat

US$ 600.00

The revolutionary journalist lies slumped in his medicinal bath, a letter and blood-stained knife beside him, moments after his assassination by Charlotte Corday. David, a friend of Marat’s, painted him with a calm, almost saintly expression, deliberately borrowing the visual language of Christian martyrdom for a political murder. It became one of the most powerful pieces of propaganda the French Revolution produced.

Artist

Jacques-Louis David (1748-1825) was the leading painter of French Neoclassicism and an active participant in the Revolution he depicted, later becoming Napoleon’s official painter. His style favoured clear drawing, restrained colour and moral seriousness borrowed from Roman history, applied equally to ancient subjects and to the political events unfolding around him. He was imprisoned after the fall of Robespierre before rebuilding his career under Napoleon.
