Artist
Caravaggio (1571-1610) was commissioned to paint both Cerasi Chapel canvases in 1600, at the point where his reputation in Rome was at its height and his personal conduct was beginning to unravel. He worked directly onto the canvas without preparatory drawings, an almost unheard-of method at the time. His insistence on unidealised bodies and dirty feet in religious pictures drew both patronage and repeated rejection.
