Artist
Paulus Potter (1625-1654) died of tuberculosis at twenty-eight, having spent his short career painting cattle, sheep and horses with a seriousness normally reserved for people. He worked outdoors from direct observation at a time when almost nobody did, and his animals have individual character rather than generic type. This canvas, painted when he was twenty-two, is the reason he is remembered.
