Paolo Uccello

The Battle of San Romano

US$ 624.00

Lances, horses and broken armour are arranged across the picture with the deliberateness of a stage set, fallen weapons pointing along perspective lines toward a vanishing point. The horses are pink, white and dappled; the whole thing is closer to pageantry than to war. One of three panels, and the most striking of them.

Paolo Uccello (1397-1475) became obsessed with the newly discovered rules of linear perspective, and according to Vasari would sit up all night working at them, telling his wife what a sweet thing perspective was. That obsession is visible everywhere in his work. He treated a battlefield as a geometry problem, and the result looks stranger and more modern than almost anything else from the fifteenth century.
