Meindert Hobbema

The Avenue at Middelharnis

US$ 612.00

A dead-straight sandy road runs into the distance between two rows of spindly, heavily pruned alders, with a village church on the horizon and a low Dutch sky filling most of the canvas. The perspective is so aggressively centred that the painting reads almost as a demonstration of one-point recession. It is the most famous image in Dutch landscape painting of a completely ordinary place.

Artist

Meindert Hobbema (1638-1709) trained under Jacob van Ruisdael and painted watermills, woods and country roads, though he largely gave up painting in his thirties after taking a job as a wine gauger for the Amsterdam customs. The Avenue at Middelharnis is a late work and by far his best known. His reputation was made posthumously in England, where his landscapes strongly influenced Constable and the Norwich School.
