Artist
Thomas Eakins (1844-1916) studied in Paris under Gerome before returning to Philadelphia, where he built a career on rowing scenes, surgical theatres, portraits and the human figure studied without idealisation. His use of photography as a preparatory tool was systematic and unusual for the period. The circumstances around this painting and his teaching methods have been the subject of extensive later scholarship.
