Ilya Repin

Religious Procession in Kursk Province

US$ 666.00

A dusty procession stretches back to the horizon — icon-bearers, gendarmes on horseback, pilgrims, a hunchbacked boy pushing forward with his crutch — the whole social order of provincial Russia moving in one direction. Repin spent years on preparatory studies. Nobody in the crowd is idealised, which is exactly why it was controversial.

Artist:

Ilya Repin (1844-1930) was the foremost Russian realist of the nineteenth century and a leading figure among the Wanderers, who took art out of the academy and into the provinces. He painted peasants, revolutionaries, musicians and tsars with the same unsparing attention. He spent his last decades in Finland after the border moved around him.
