Three brothers stretch their arms toward the swords their father holds aloft, swearing to fight to the death for Rome, while the women of the household collapse in grief at the right. David divides the canvas into rigid male geometry and soft female curves, making the composition itself argue the picture’s point about duty over feeling. Painted five years before the Revolution, it was read almost immediately as a call to civic sacrifice.

Jacques-Louis David (1748-1825) established French Neoclassicism with this painting, rejecting Rococo prettiness for austere drawing, shallow stage-like space and subjects drawn from Roman history. He became a leading figure of the Revolution, voted for the king’s execution, and later served as Napoleon’s official painter before dying in exile in Brussels. His studio trained a generation of French painters including Ingres and Gérard.
