Artist:
Tyeb Mehta (1925–2009) was a towering figure in modern Indian art, known for his emotionally intense and visually striking paintings. A member of the Progressive Artists’ Group, Mehta broke away from traditional styles to explore modernism and abstraction, using bold lines, fragmented forms, and dramatic color palettes.
His works often reflect themes of violence, conflict, and suffering, influenced by personal experiences like witnessing the violence during the Partition of India. One of his most iconic works, Mahishasura, combines mythology with modern angst and fetched $1.58 million at Christie’s in 2005—marking a turning point for Indian art in the global market.
