Artist
Vincent van Gogh (1853-1890) painted this in the first week after admitting himself to the asylum at Saint-Remy, working in the walled garden and calling the painting a lightning conductor for his illness. He completed roughly 130 works in the year he spent there. His brother Theo submitted it to the Salon des Independants that September.
