Artist
Vilhelm Hammershoi (1864-1916) painted the same few grey rooms of his Copenhagen apartment for most of his career, usually with his wife Ida seen from behind. He worked in a palette of greys, blacks and muted browns at a time when his contemporaries were chasing colour, and he was largely written off for decades before a late-twentieth-century revival made him one of the most quietly admired painters in Europe.
