J.M.W. Turner

Dido Building Carthage

US$ 690.00

A rising city glows on either side of a harbour while the sun climbs directly out of the water at the centre, drowning the architecture in gold. Turner regarded this as his masterpiece and left it to the National Gallery on condition it hang beside a Claude Lorrain, so that posterity could judge the comparison. He also asked, in an earlier will, to be buried wrapped in it.
