Artist
Thomas Cole (1801-1848) founded the Hudson River School and, unusually for American landscape painters of the period, used landscape to argue explicitly moral and political points. Born in England, he emigrated at seventeen and taught himself largely by copying. The Course of Empire series, painted in the 1830s, reflected his anxieties about American expansion and the durability of republics.
