Artist
Gustav Klimt (1862-1918) built the most recognisable decorative language of European art — gold leaf, mosaic pattern, flattened ornament wrapped around figures drawn with real anatomical care. He worked on this canvas for over a decade, winning first prize at the 1911 Rome International Exhibition with it and then reworking it again afterwards, replacing the gold background with a deep blue-green.
