Rembrandt van Rijn

Self-Portrait with Two Circles

US$ 786.00

Rembrandt stands with palette and brushes against a wall marked by two mysterious arcs, painted in his sixties after bankruptcy and the deaths of most of his family. The face is worked in thick, dragged, unglamorous paint; the hands are barely finished. Nobody has satisfactorily explained the circles.

Artist

Rembrandt van Rijn (1606-1669) is the central figure of the Dutch Golden Age, unmatched in his handling of light, shadow and human character. He worked through history painting, portraiture and etching, and painted himself roughly a hundred times across four decades. Bankruptcy in 1656 cost him his house and collection but not his output.
