Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres (1780-1867) was David’s pupil and the great defender of line against Delacroix’s colour. He drew with almost inhuman precision and distorted anatomy freely when the design required it. Portraiture he claimed to resent, yet it produced his most extraordinary pictures.
