Gustav Klimt

The Virgin

US$ 852.00

Seven women and girls are tangled together in a single spiralling mass of patterned fabric, asleep or dreaming, with one figure at the centre in white. Klimt uses the whole surface as ornament — circles, spirals, flowers — so that the bodies emerge from decoration rather than sitting inside it. It is among the last things he finished.

Artist:

Gustav Klimt (1862-1918) led the Vienna Secession and built a style out of gold leaf, mosaic pattern and frankly erotic figuration that had no real precedent. He took commissions from Vienna’s Jewish industrial families and painted their wives into icons. His late landscapes are almost abstract fields of colour.
