Joaquin Sorolla

Sewing the Sail

US$ 732.00

A group of women and men work an enormous sail spread across a Valencian courtyard, the white cloth catching sun and throwing it back into the shade. Sorolla painted the whole thing outdoors at full scale, chasing the light as it moved. The subject is ordinary labour; the picture is almost entirely about brightness.

Artist:

Joaquin Sorolla (1863-1923) painted the light of the Spanish Mediterranean with a speed and confidence that made him internationally famous in his lifetime. Working outdoors on very large canvases, he caught sunlight on water, cloth and skin better than almost anyone. A stroke in 1920 ended his painting; he died three years later.
