Artist
Gustave Courbet (1819-1877) built this canvas for the 1855 Exposition Universelle, and when the jury rejected it he erected his own Pavilion of Realism nearby and charged admission. The figures on the right include Baudelaire and Proudhon; those on the left are types rather than portraits. The picture’s ambition and contradictions have kept it under scholarly argument ever since.
