Artist
Piero della Francesca (c.1415-1492) was a mathematician as much as a painter, writing treatises on perspective and solid geometry that were studied long after his pictures fell out of fashion. His work was largely forgotten for four centuries and only returned to prominence in the twentieth, when modern painters recognised in his flat, ordered compositions something close to their own concerns. He went blind in old age and stopped painting entirely.
