Jacques-Louis David

Napoleon Crossing the Alps

US$ 627.00

Napoleon sits astride a rearing horse, cloak whipped by wind, one arm pointing toward the mountain pass ahead, though he actually crossed the Alps on a mule led by a guide. David painted five versions of this deliberately heroic, invented image at Napoleon’s request, intended as much as propaganda as portraiture. The rocks at the horse’s feet carry the names Hannibal and Charlemagne, placing Napoleon among history’s great conquerors.

Artist

Jacques-Louis David (1748-1825) became Napoleon’s official painter after the Revolution, producing grand, idealised images that helped construct the emperor’s public image. He had earlier been a committed revolutionary and voted for the execution of Louis XVI, and his art shifted from moral instruction to overt political propaganda as French politics moved from Republic to Empire. His technical mastery made even his most staged compositions convincing.
