Jan Steen

The Merry Family

US$ 600.00

Three generations sing, drink and play at a cluttered table while the children help themselves to wine and a pipe. A note pinned above reads that as the old sing, so the young pipe — the whole picture is an illustration of the proverb, and a warning dressed as a party. Painted in 1668 and hanging in the Rijksmuseum.

Jan Steen (c. 1626-1679) ran a tavern alongside his painting career, which shows. He specialised in disorderly households so consistently that a Dutch phrase still exists — een huishouden van Jan Steen, a Jan Steen household — for a place in cheerful chaos. Beneath the comedy the pictures usually carry a proverb, and he was a far more careful painter than the subjects suggest.
