Paulus Potter

The Bull

US$ 684.00

A young bull stands life-size in a meadow with a cow, sheep and a herdsman, painted with every hair, fly and blade of grass attended to. Contemporaries were baffled that an artist would give a farm animal the scale of a history painting. Over three metres wide in the original, and it has been one of the star attractions of the Mauritshuis for two centuries.

Artist

Paulus Potter (1625-1654) died of tuberculosis at twenty-eight, having spent his short career painting cattle, sheep and horses with a seriousness normally reserved for people. He worked outdoors from direct observation at a time when almost nobody did, and his animals have individual character rather than generic type. This canvas, painted when he was twenty-two, is the reason he is remembered.
