Artist
Ivan Shishkin (1832-1898) was the great forest painter of Russian art and a leading member of the Peredvizhniki, the Wanderers, who broke from the imperial academy to take art to provincial audiences. He drew trees with the precision of a botanist and was criticised for it, which never troubled him. Few painters have looked as hard at bark, moss and the particular way light falls through conifers.
