Artist:
Mary Stevenson Cassatt (1844–1926) was an American painter and printmaker who became a prominent figure in the French Impressionist movement. Living much of her life in Paris, she was the only American artist invited to exhibit with the Impressionists, thanks in part to her close association with Edgar Degas. Cassatt brought a distinct and powerful female perspective to Impressionism, focusing on the private lives of women—especially the bond between mothers and children.
Her work is known for its tender intimacy, soft yet expressive color palettes, and influences from Japanese art (Japonisme), especially in her compositions and use of space. Cassatt’s ability to convey quiet emotion and strength through domestic scenes made her stand out in a male-dominated art world. Through both her art and her advocacy, she helped introduce modern French painting to American collectors, playing a major role in shaping art appreciation in the United States.
