Kawase Hasui (1883–1957) was a renowned Japanese woodblock print artist and a leading figure of the Shin-hanga (“new prints”) movement, which revitalized traditional ukiyo-e techniques in the early 20th century. Hasui is celebrated for his tranquil and atmospheric landscapes, especially those depicting rural Japan, seasonal transitions, and quiet urban scenes. His prints often feature temples, snow-covered villages, rivers, and streets under soft rain or moonlight, rendered with exquisite attention to mood, light, and detail.
Influenced by both traditional Japanese art and Western realism, Hasui’s work is known for its subtle color gradations, delicate compositions, and poetic sensibility. He collaborated closely with master publisher Watanabe Shōzaburō, whose studio helped define the Shin-hanga aesthetic. In 1956, a year before his death, Kawase Hasui was designated a Living National Treasure by the Japanese government—a rare honor that recognized his immense contribution to preserving and evolving Japan’s printmaking tradition. His works remain beloved worldwide for their meditative beauty and timeless portrayal of Japanese landscapes.
