Saurashtra

$5,500

Description:

Saurashtra is one of the most iconic and valuable paintings by S.H. Raza, created in 1983. This large, vibrant work exemplifies Raza’s mature style, marked by geometric abstraction, symbolism, and a deep connection to Indian spirituality and landscape.

Named after the Saurashtra region in Gujarat, the painting is a bold tapestry of squares, circles, triangles, and radiant color fields, evoking the essence of Indian soil, energy, and culture rather than depicting the land literally. The composition is centered around the Bindu, Raza’s spiritual symbol of origin and consciousness, surrounded by sacred geometry reflecting cosmic harmony.

Saurashtra gained international fame when it sold for ₹16.42 crore (approximately $3.48 million) at a Christie’s auction in 2010, making it one of the most expensive Indian artworks ever sold.

Artist:

S.H. Raza (1922–2016) was one of the most influential modern Indian painters, known for his profound use of geometry, symbolism, and color to explore Indian spirituality and philosophy. A founding member of the Progressive Artists’ Group, Raza began with expressionist landscapes and later evolved into creating deeply symbolic and abstract works rooted in Indian cosmology.

His most iconic motif is the Bindu (dot), which he considered the source of all creation—a spiritual and artistic anchor in his work. Through circles, triangles, squares, and radiant color fields, Raza sought to visually express concepts like Prakriti (nature), Purusha (cosmic spirit), and the Panchatatva (five elements).
