Katsushika Hokusai (1760–1849) was a Japanese ukiyo-e artist, best known for his woodblock prints and paintings. Hokusai is one of the most influential artists of the Edo period, with a wide range of works spanning landscapes, portraits, and historical themes. His most iconic work, The Great Wave off Kanagawa (1831), is part of the series Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji and remains one of the most recognizable images in Japanese art. Hokusai’s ability to combine detailed nature scenes with dynamic composition and strong lines made him a pioneer in the ukiyo-e genre.
He was also known for his innovative use of perspective and the way he infused his works with emotional depth. His art greatly influenced both Eastern and Western artists and continues to be celebrated for its bold, expressive style.
