Artist:
Xu Beihong (1895–1953) was one of the most influential Chinese artists of the 20th century, widely recognized for modernizing Chinese painting by blending traditional Chinese brush techniques with Western realism. Trained both in China and Europe, Xu studied oil painting and drawing at the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris. He was deeply committed to reforming Chinese art education and believed that Chinese painting should reflect both national identity and international standards of technique and expression.
Xu Beihong is best known for his powerful ink paintings of galloping horses, which became iconic symbols of strength, freedom, and resilience. His works often carried nationalistic undertones, especially during times of political unrest in China. In addition to his paintings, Xu played a key role in shaping modern Chinese art institutions—he served as the first president of the Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing. His legacy endures through his artworks, teachings, and the countless artists he inspired to pursue innovation while respecting tradition.
