Artist:
Sayed Haider Raza (1922–2016) was a legendary Indian modern artist best known for his deeply symbolic and spiritual abstract paintings. A founding member of the Progressive Artists’ Group, Raza initially painted landscapes in an expressionist style before evolving into geometric abstraction inspired by Indian philosophy, nature, and cultural motifs.
His iconic use of the bindu (a central dot) became a recurring and defining symbol in his work, representing cosmic energy, origin, and consciousness. Influenced by both Western modernism and Indian metaphysical thought, Raza successfully bridged global art movements with Indian tradition. Living between India and France for much of his life, he gained international acclaim, and his paintings have fetched record-breaking prices at major auctions.
Raza’s legacy is celebrated for bringing spiritual depth, cultural identity, and visual innovation into the modern art world.
