Artist:
Jogen Chowdhury (b. 1939) is a leading figure of contemporary Indian art, celebrated for his expressive, sinuous linework and psychologically charged figuration. Trained at Kolkata’s Government College of Art & Craft and École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, he developed a distinctive style that fuses Bengal’s folk idioms with modernist distortion. Working mainly with ink, pastel, and cross-hatched brushstrokes, Chowdhury portrays everyday people—often contorted, textured, and isolated—to reveal inner tension, vulnerability, and social commentary.
His pivotal works such as Couple, Day Dreaming, and Midnight Dream exemplify his mastery of line and muted palette. A former curator at Rashtrapati Bhavan and a Rajya Sabha member (2014–2020), Chowdhury has earned numerous honors, including the Kalidas Samman. Today, his art commands high auction values and remains influential for its blend of lyrical beauty and unsettling emotional depth
